TOKYO, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Khanun moved slowly northward toward Japan's southwestern region of Kyushu on Tuesday, prompting a railway operator to suspend some of its shinkansen bullet train services.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned of mudslides, overflowing rivers and high waves as bands of active rain clouds are expected to develop in the Amami region and in southern and northern Kyushu through Wednesday night.

Kyushu Railway Co. said that due to the approach of the typhoon, it has halted its shinkansen services between Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo stations from Tuesday afternoon.

Typhoon Khanun is expected to continue advancing northward over the sea in the west of Kyushu through Thursday, said the JMA, adding that record-breaking precipitation could hit the Pacific side of western and eastern Japan through Friday.

Meanwhile, the weather agency said that another tropical storm Typhoon Lan, the year's seventh, has formed and could approach the country's main island of Honshu next week.
