CHENGDU, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese runners clinched both men's and women's 4x100m relay titles in 38.80 and 43.70 seconds respectively, lowering both teams' best times at the FISU World University Games here on Sunday.
In the women's race, China took a clear lead in the final stretch. Poland finished second in 44.20 seconds, with South Africa third in 44.36.
"I love our host city Chengdu. I can feel great support in the stadium. With our joint efforts, we made it," said Liang Xiaojing, who gave thanks to the spectators together with teammates Ge Manqi, Cai Yanting and Li Yuting.
China's men's team of Chen Jiapeng, Chen Guanfeng, Yan Haibin and Deng Zhijian just pipped Thailand at the finish line in 38.792 seconds, with Thailand falling agonizingly short, just 0.006 seconds adrift. South Africa finished third in 38.83.
"Athletics is always filled with surprise and hope. You never know what will happen in the next second. We never give up chasing our dream," said Deng. ■
