LONDON, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of women in developing countries will die in pregnancy and childbirth because of the United Kingdom government cut in overseas aid budget, a report has warned on Wednesday.
Hundreds of thousands more women once again face unsafe abortions, as the result of the decision to cut the UK's official development assistance (ODA) spending from 0.7 percent to 0.5 percent of the country's gross national income, it added.
The report was published by the International Development Committee of the House of Commons, which is made up of lawmaking politicians to scrutinize the work of government departments.
"Evidence submitted to the Committee over the last few years told us the cuts to UK ODA would take a human toll," Chair of the International Development Committee Sarah Champion said.
"It is a litany of the people -- living in poverty, suffering hunger, women, girls, disabled people -- who will no longer be supported by the UK's direct aid spending, and the consequences they will face," Champion added. ■
