BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

VR FACILITATING STROKE REHABILITATION

Chinese researchers have developed a new method to facilitate stroke rehabilitation through the utilization of virtual reality (VR) techniques.

The researchers from Beihang University used surface electromyography (sEMG) of contralateral wrist movement to trigger virtual ankle movement through an improved data-driven approach with a continuous sEMG signal for fast and accurate intention recognition.

The VR interactive system can provide feedback training for stroke patients in the early stages even if there is no active ankle movement.

LEAF-EATING BIRDS AND PLANT EVOLUTION

A team of Chinese paleontologists has made a significant discovery by identifying remnants of a vegetable diet in the stomach contents of a 120-million-year-old fossilized bird found in northeastern China.

The findings, published recently in the journal Nature Communications, provide direct dietary evidence that the earliest bird on our planet called Jeholornis consumed leaves of plants that produce flowers and bear their seeds in fruits.

AI MODEL FOR EL NINO PREDICTIONS

Chinese researchers have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model powered by deep learning algorithms to predict the development and pattern of central Pacific El Nino events.

According to the study, the AI model surpasses traditional dynamical models in accuracy, particularly in predicting sea surface temperature anomalies in the west-central equatorial Pacific.

The study also suggests that a hybrid model that combines predictions from both the AI model and dynamical models achieves even higher accuracy for central and east Pacific El Nino events.
