CHENGDU, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Jamaica's Kadrian Goldson and Luxembourg's Patrizia Van Der Weken clinched the men's and women's 100 meters titles at the 31st FISU World University Games here on Wednesday.
Goldson completed in 10.04 seconds, while Patrizia crossed the finishing line at the result of 11.22 seconds.
"I am having trouble with my start, so if I got that right the result might be different. I felt really powerful today. I thought I had the chance to break 10 seconds, but it did not happen, still I won the gold medal. My next target is the Paris 2024 Olympic Games," said Goldson.
China's Chen Guanfeng from Guangzhou Polytechnic of Sports took the bronze in men's 100 meters with 10.17 seconds.
"My predecessors have set us a good example, and we younger generation are learning from them and striving to stand on the highest podium," he said.
Poland's Nikola Horowska was crowned in the women's long jump final with 6.60 meters, followed by her compatriot Magdalena Bokun with 6.41 meters.
"It is really hard to balance long jump, high jump, running and so on, but I have tried my best to achieve them," said Horowska.
Poland is also a big winner in men's discus throw and shot put. Oskar Stachnik topped in discus throw final by reaching 63.00 meters in his fifth attempt. Konrad Bukowiecki and Szymon Mazur added a gold and a silver for Poland in the shot put with a result of 20.23 and 19.20 meters respectively.
In the men's 10,000 meters final, Uganda's Dismas Yeko finished in 28:59.25 to claim the championship.
"I used my experience in earlier world championships. This competition is tough and I finally caught up in the last four laps. At that moment, I know it is time for me to try my best and speed up because my goal today is to bring the gold medal back home," he said. ■
