NAIROBI, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- At least one person was killed and three others injured after suspected al-Shabab militants attacked vehicles along the Lamu-Witu-Garsen road in the coastal county of Lamu Tuesday morning.
Lamu West Deputy County Commissioner Gabriel Kioni told Xinhua over the phone that security forces from the Special Operations Group and the forest rangers responded to the incident and rescued the injured victims, who were taken to the local hospital for treatment.
Several vehicles and buses heading to the coastal city of Mombasa were stopped along the way as a result of the attack, he said.
The police and witnesses said the terrorists used rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles to target vehicles on the Lamu-Witu route.
The latest incident in Lamu County came days after al-Shabab militants killed a police reservist and injured two others outside Dadaab Refugee Camp in Garissa County.
The terrorists have been attacking places near the Kenyan border by using guns and explosives, leaving dozens dead and many injured. ■
