ANKARA, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Türkiye will continue to back the Palestinian cause and support the prosperity of Palestinians, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday.

"We continue to support the Palestinian cause in the strongest way possible. We are deeply concerned about the violence of illegal settlers," Erdogan said at a joint press conference with visiting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the capital Ankara.

Establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital within the 1967 borders based on UN parameters is essential for the peace and stability of the entire region, Erdogan added.

The Turkish president stressed that the international community, especially the UN, should be engaged in the Palestinian issue.

Erdogan added that Ankara would not tolerate any acts attempting to change the historical status quo of holy places, particularly the al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem.

Abbas, for his part, said that the Palestinians praised Türkiye's support to the Palestinian people to gain their freedom and independence.

Earlier in the day, Erdogan welcomed Abbas with an official ceremony at the presidential complex in Ankara. Then the two leaders held one-on-one talks, followed by a joint news conference.

Erdogan and Abbas discussed all fields of bilateral relations and the steps to deepen bilateral cooperation. The Palestine-Israel issue as well as other regional and international developments were also on the agenda of their talks.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's planned visit to Türkiye this week was postponed after he underwent surgery.
