PHNOM PENH, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said on Wednesday that he will retire after serving as the premier for 38 years in the Southeast Asian nation and will pass the reins of power to his eldest son Hun Manet.

"Hun Manet will become the prime minister in just more than three weeks," he said in a televised speech on the state-run National Television of Cambodia (TVK).

Hun Sen said the National Assembly will convene for the first time on Aug. 21, and the new five-year-term government will be sworn in on Aug. 22.

Hun Sen said the political power will be still in his hand because he is still the president of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP), however, he will not interfere in the new government's leadership.

Hun Sen, 70, said he will take the post of President of the Senate after the Senate Election on Feb. 25, 2024.
