JERUSALEM, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Israel announced on Wednesday a plan to connect major military bases to a national transmission network of natural gas to boost the defense sector's energy efficiency.
The move allows major Israel Defense Forces (IDF) bases to generate electricity on their own for operational needs, and helps expand natural gas access to consumers in new regions, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure said in a statement.
The plan was aimed at making full use of the energy-saving advantages of the natural gas network, the ministry said, adding that IDF's Urim SIGINT Base in the Negev desert, southern Israel, would be the first such facility connected to the gas grid.
The IDF bases project would join other plans of the ministry to connect public institutions like hospitals throughout Israel to natural gas network. ■
