HAMILTON, New Zealand, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Switzerland's goalkeeper Gaelle Thalmann put on a good show on Tuesday as her fine saves helped Switzerland snatch one point against Norway in Group A of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
Switzerland opened their World Cup campaign by defeating the Philippines 2-0, while Norway were frustrated by co-hosts New Zealand 1-0.
Norway were dealt a blow moments before the opening whistle as their ironic player Ada Hegerberg exited the pitch due to a reported groin injury, and the women's Ballon d'Or winner was then replaced by Sophie Haug.
In what was quite an even play, Thalmann was called into action in the 24th minutes as she punched away Haug's header, while on the other end Ana Crnogorcevic's attempt on Coumba Sow's assist went wide of the post.
The game was still open after the break but Norway were sharper. Haug tested Thalmann again in the 55th minute, but her first-time strike was denied and the goalkeeper also performed a double-save to keep the scoreline down.
With the draw, Switzerland top the group with four points, one point ahead of New Zealand and the Philippines, while the 1995 World Cup champion Norway sat bottom with one point.
Switzerland meet New Zealand in the final round of the group phase on Sunday, while Norway take on the Philippines. ■
