ADEN, Yemen, July 24 (Xinhua) -- At least 11 people were injured as a powerful storm, accompanied by heavy rains and strong winds, struck Yemen's southern port city of Aden early Monday.

The sudden storm caused a glass facade to collapse in the departure hall of Aden International Airport, injuring at least 11 passengers, including children, a local medical official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The injured have been taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment, the official added.

The airport's facilities and several vehicles parked in the vicinity were also damaged, said another official.

The storm raged on in residential areas, causing damage to numerous old houses throughout Aden, he said, noting that local authorities and relief organizations were conducting damage assessments and assisting those affected.

Earlier in the day, Yemen's National Meteorological Center warned that the storm is part of a larger weather activity expected to bring sporadic rains and strong winds, adding the noon and evening periods are prone to such weather activity.
