TEHRAN, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Iran is pursuing the strategy of ensuring security and promoting economic activities along the common border with Pakistan, President Ebrahim Raisi said Sunday.

He made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Pakistani Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir in the capital Tehran, according to a statement published on the website of his office.

Raisi called for mutual efforts to develop border markets and expand bilateral energy cooperation to implement the strategy more effectively, noting an improvement in bilateral economic and trade cooperation would lead to an enhancement in political relations between the two countries.

Munir, for his part, said given the two countries' long common border, Pakistan and Iran have numerous capacities for increasing border transactions.

He agreed that strengthening bilateral economic, trade and border interactions will help improve border security, saying his country is accelerating measures to ensure lasting security in border areas.

Earlier in the day, the Pakistani army chief met with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on bilateral cooperation, issues of common interest and regional developments.

On Saturday, Munir met with Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Mohammad Baqeri and Chief Commander of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Hossein Salami to exchange views on security and defense cooperation.
