COPENHAGEN, July 7 (Xinhua) -- The Danish-led Multinational Division North (MND-N) headquarters (HQ) of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is now fully operational in Latvia, the Danish Ministry of Defense said in a press release on Friday.

The new HQ at the Adazi Military Base near Riga, the capital of Latvia, is responsible for coordinating land-based military operations in the region and can be fully integrated into NATO's force structure, according to the ministry.

The HQ had been under construction since 2018 and was inaugurated in March 2019. Denmark is committed to contributing approximately half of the HQ's personnel, along with deploying a battalion of 1,200 troops for a duration of four to six months a year, starting in mid-2024, at Camp Valdemars in the Adazi Military Base.

Denmark's Acting Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen and his Latvian counterpart Inara Murniece also issued a joint declaration in Latvia on "deepening bilateral cooperation" between the two Baltic neighbors on Friday, said the release.
