MAPUTO, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Mozambique will allocate more than 5 billion Meticais (78 million U.S. dollars) for rehabilitation, the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources Carlos Mesquita has announced.

The allotment is intended for recovering or improving infrastructures including roads, buildings, and dams affected by the Freddy Cyclone earlier this year, local media Opais reported.

The initiative, which will start in a few days, is part of the emergency action plan, Mesquita said during a meeting in the town of Inhassoro, province of Inhambane.

Cyclone Freddy, which formed around Feb. 6 and lasted 37 days, was considered the longest ever. It followed an unusual route that crossed Mozambique and Malawi twice, causing thousands of deaths and homelessness.

The floods caused by Cyclone Freddy, aggravated by the interruption of water, sanitation, and hygiene services, led to a rapid acceleration in the number of cholera cases.
