GUATEMALA CITY, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Polling stations opened Sunday in Guatemala for general elections to choose the next president, members of Congress, local mayors and representatives of the Central American Parliament.

Around 9.3 million Guatemalans are registered to vote in the elections and 3,482 polling centers were authorized by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal.

As many as 22 candidates are competing to succeed current President Alejandro Giammattei, whose term ends in January 2024.

Voters will also elect 160 deputies to Congress, 20 representatives to the Central American Parliament and 340 municipal mayors across the country.
