CAIRO, June 22 (Xinhua) -- An Egyptian-American joint archaeological mission has discovered a cemetery dating back to the 18th Dynasty which was founded by King Ahmose I around 3,500 years ago, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said on Thursday.

The mission also unearthed some buildings believed to be residential or for offering services. The discovery was made during excavation work in Abydos city of Sohag Province, southern Egypt.

"More discoveries are expected in this area that constituted a turning point in the history of ancient Egypt," the ministry said in a statement.

The mission also finished the restoration work of the pyramid of Queen Titisheri, the grandmother of King Ahmose I.

The statement noted that Titisheri's pyramid is the last pyramid built for a queen in ancient Egypt.
