South Africa's inflation continues to cool

JOHANNESBURG, June 21 (Xinhua) -- South Africa's consumer inflation cooled for the second consecutive month in May to 6.3 percent from 6.8 percent in the previous month, official data showed Wednesday.

The reading in May is the lowest since April 2022 when the rate was 5.9 percent, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said.

In May, the annual inflation rate for food and non-alcoholic beverages was 11.8 percent, down from 13.9 percent in April.

Annual meat inflation also dipped in May, which slowed to 7.1 percent from 9.5 percent in April, the data showed.

Price data for May showed that the country's annual inflation for the restaurants and hotels category accelerated to 6.4 percent from 5.1 percent in April.

The annual transport inflation increased by 7 percent in May, Stats SA said.
