SHENYANG, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Song Xibin, a former senior legislator in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, on Wednesday stood trial for bribery and misappropriation of public funds at a court in the northeastern province of Liaoning.
Song, former vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the Heilongjiang Provincial People's Congress, was charged with accepting over 35.3 million yuan (about 4.9 million U.S. dollars) worth of money and valuables between 2005 and 2021.
Song allegedly took advantage of his various positions in Heilongjiang to seek profits for others in business operations, project contracting, and job promotions, according to the prosecutors of Shenyang City, where the trial occurred.
The indictment also accused Song of misappropriating 50 million yuan in the city's special funds to personal gains in 2014 when he worked in Harbin, the capital city of Heilongjiang.
During hearings at the Intermediate People's Court of Shenyang, prosecutors presented their evidence, which the defendant and his lawyers cross-examined.
Song pleaded guilty and expressed remorse in his final statement.
The verdict will be announced in due course. ■
