COLOMBO, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan government has launched regular inspections on key sites in efforts to control the dengue outbreak, especially in the worst-hit Western Province, according to a statement from the President's Media Division (PMD) issued on Tuesday.

The PMD said specific weekdays have been designated for the inspections on schools, construction sites, factories, and private and government institutions.

Over 40,000 dengue cases have been reported in the South Asian country, according to statistics released by the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) at the Health Ministry.

The NDCU has categorized 67 areas as high-risk regions, with the highest number of cases reported in Western Province, the most populous area in Sri Lanka.

The dengue outbreak usually takes place with the onset of the rainy season in Sri Lanka, which is currently experiencing southwest monsoon rain.

According to official data, Sri Lanka registered over 76,000 dengue cases in 2022.
