YUMAI, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Located at the southern foot of the Himalayas, Yumai once had a population of three -- Zhoigar, her sister Yangzom and their father Sangye Quba, who was the former township head and passed away in 2001. Taking her father's walking stick, Zhoigar followed in her father's footsteps and patrolled the border.

Her father instilled in her the attitude that "protecting the land beneath your feet is to protect your country," and so Zhoigar braved wind and snow, and persisted in her career.

Before Sangye Quba's death, he expressed his belief that the authority would develop Yumai well.

Since 2018, Yumai has embarked on the construction of a prosperous border township with steel-framed houses, drainage, schools, and parks popping up one after another. In 2019, a reconstruction project of the 50-kilometer paved road connecting Yumai to a neighboring township was completed, ending the trouble of being snowbound every year. Additionally, the State Grid extended a 10-kilovolt power transmission line to Yumai, providing stable and secure electricity.

Nowadays, Sangye Quba's wish has been fulfilled. The once three-person township is home to over 200 people and oversees two villages. In 2022, the per capita annual income in Yumai reached nearly 44,000 yuan (about 6,142.8 U.S. dollars) with a per capita residential area of 40 square meters.
