NAIROBI, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Kenya has closed its embassy in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, following reports that armed groups were targeting diplomatic missions as fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces escalated.

Korir Singoei, principal secretary of Foreign Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, said Kenya had remained open to facilitate the evacuation of any Kenyans in Sudan.

"We continue to receive disturbing news of the targeting of diplomatic officials by armed groups in Khartoum, Sudan. The Kenya Mission in Khartoum which had remained open to facilitate evacuation of any Kenyans still in the country is now closed," Singoei said in a tweet Sunday evening.

Kenya has so far rescued at least 900 people by the beginning of May, as the fighting between Sudan's generals went on.

There were more than 3,000 Kenyans living in Sudan, according to the foreign ministry.
