NEW DELHI, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Many feared killed and over 300 people were injured after a passenger train collided with a cargo train Friday evening in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, local media reports said.

The accident occurred around 7:20 p.m. local time near Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore district, about 171 km northeast of Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha.

According to officials, the Coromandel Express, which runs from Kolkata to Chennai, hit the Yashwantpur-Howrah Express, which derailed and toppled onto the adjacent track.

Following the accident, various rescue and response teams were quickly dispatched to the site to conduct necessary measures.

The accident disrupted train movement on the affected route.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident.

"Distressed by the train accident in Odisha. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon," a statement issued by Modi said.
