Irfan Javed, a cooking oil extraction machine owner in Pakistan has seen a business boom when customers flock to his shop with freshly harvested Chinese canola crop to extract oil.
The crop is produced locally under an agreement between Chinese company Wuhan Qingfa Hesheng Seed Co. Ltd and Pakistani company Evyol Group.
Pakistan consumes around 5 million tonnes of cooking oil every year. But the country has to import most of it.
The agreement is helping Pakistan to reduce its dependence on edible oil imports.
Besides, as the Chinese hybrid canola has a high-profit margin, it has already become popular among Pakistani farmers.
Muhammad Azim, team leader of Evyol Group in Gujranwala, said that the Chinese variety has already helped Pakistan secure a bumper harvest this year, adding that his company will continue to work with its Chinese partner to better localize production of the crop.
