UNITED NATIONS, May 29 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday underscored the need to recognize contributions made by UN peacekeepers, and called for sustained support for the blue helmets.

UN peacekeepers are "the beating heart" of the world body's commitment to a more peaceful world, he said in a message to commemorate the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, which falls on May 29.

"Today, on the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, we honor their extraordinary contributions to international peace and security," said the UN chief.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of UN peacekeeping, which, according to Guterres, has seen more than 2 million peacekeepers serving in 71 missions, helping countries navigate the difficult path from war to peace.

More than 4,200 peacekeepers have lost their lives serving under the UN flag since 1948.

"We stand in sympathy and solidarity with their families, friends and colleagues, and will forever be inspired by their selfless devotion to the cause of peace," Guterres said.

Today, more than 87,000 peacekeepers from 125 countries serve in 12 operations. They face rising global tensions and divides, stagnating peace processes, and more complex conflicts, he said.

Despite the obstacles, peacekeepers persevere and the UN blue helmets represent hope to people caught in conflict, he noted.

"As peacekeepers support humanity, let us always support and recognize them," said Guterres.
