UNITED NATIONS, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations and its partners continue to help families displaced by the fighting in Sudan, as well as the communities hosting them, said a UN spokesman on Friday.

The World Food Programme (WFP) has now reached more than 600,000 vulnerable people with food and nutrition aid since restarting distributions in the country, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The WFP has reached some 180,000 people in three of the five states of Darfur: North Darfur, South Darfur, and East Darfur. The agency is planning to start distributions in Central Darfur in the coming days, he said.

As of Friday, the WFP has resumed distributions in Blue Nile state in southeastern Sudan, he added.

During the past two weeks, the World Health Organization has verified eight new reports of attacks on health care facilities, bringing the total number of such attacks to 38 since this round of fighting erupted in Sudan on April 15, said the spokesman.

Dujarric said there is still some sporadic fighting despite a truce.

"We are not officially monitoring the truce. And our humanitarian colleagues are exploiting any lull in the fighting to deliver humanitarian aid. But people in different parts of the country are continuing to suffer tremendously," he told a daily press briefing.
