The 2023 Taklimakan Rally is ongoing in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Some of the local inheritors of Twelve Muqams cheered for the racers with the traditional music.
Twelve Muqams, known as the "Mother of Uygur Music," is a group of classical music pieces combining Uygur singing, dancing and music, considered a treasure of Chinese ethnic music.
The first Taklimakan Rally was held in 2005. It has grown into the largest off-road endurance race in Asia, with most of its track winding through dunes, mud, and rocks.
