JAKARTA, May 23 (Xinhua) -- The opposition party National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT) leads the national polls of Timor-leste's parliamentary election, local media reported on Tuesday.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the media reports said that Timor-Leste's Election Administration Technical Secretariat had completed the counting of 100 percent of total votes. The CNRT, which is led by Xanana Gusmao, won 41.62 percent of the total votes counted.

The ruling party Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (Fretilin), led by former prime minister Mari Alkatiricurrent, followed with 25.75 percent or 178,248 votes. Other main parties, the Democratic Party and Kmanek Haburas Unidade Nasional Timor Oan (KHNUTO) obtained 9.32 percent and 7.52 percent, respectively.

Timor-Leste held its parliamentary election on May 21, the fifth since its independence in 2002. Voter turnout in this election was 79.28 percent, or around 705,683 votes, of the 890,145 registered voters.

The 76-year-old Gusmao previously served as Timor-Leste's president and prime minister. Economic development was one of the main promises of his party during the campaign.

Based on the parliamentary election calendar released on Timor-Leste's government website, the Secretariat is scheduled to complete the final counting results before May 30. If there is no appeal against the election results, the country's Court of Appeal will proclaim them no later than June 6.
