UNITED NATIONS, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Richard T. Jordan, an American deeply captivated by Chinese culture since his childhood, couldn't contain his excitement as he expressed his sentiments during a tea culture reception held Friday at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

"I know China so well as I was born and raised in Flushing, New York. I discovered China through my 18 visits over the past 10 years. I understand China from the inside," Jordan told Xinhua after Zhang Jun, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, concluded his remarks at the International Tea Day celebration event.

Flushing, a vibrant neighborhood in New York City renowned for its rich cultural tapestry and diverse community, holds a special place in Jordan's heart. Growing up in Flushing, he developed a deep appreciation for Chinese culture, which has significantly influenced his worldview and professional endeavors.

"The magic leaf of tea is a bridge between humans and nature. If you look at the Chinese character 'tea,' you will find it composed of three parts, with grass on top, people in the middle, and wood at the bottom. The character itself is a picture of 'people living in nature,'" Zhang said in his remarks, highlighting the symbolic nature of tea.

Jordan, profoundly influenced by his decades-long career with UN-associated non-governmental organizations, well echoed the Chinese ambassador's description of tea and expressed his admiration for China.

He emphasized the significance of harmony and simple ideas like friendship, highlighting the vital role played by Chinese tea culture in uniting people through soft diplomacy.

"We (Jordan and his wife) will promote Chinese tea culture and strengthen Chinese-American relations in the United States," said Jordan, stressing the need for Americans, especially New Yorkers, to take the lead in appreciating China.

As participants from various countries, including a significant number of Americans, engaged in the event, Jordan keenly observed the dynamics of the relationship between China and the United States. He emphasized that this relationship is "not defined by competition but rather by cooperation and mutual understanding."

In a world that often witnesses tensions and conflicts, Jordan said he believes that embracing "the principles of harmony and collaboration can lead to a brighter and more prosperous future for all."

Jordan's impressive professional background reflects his deep involvement in and influential contributions to the UN and global affairs. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, he dedicated over 8,000 days of service as the Dean of Non-governmental Organizational Representatives, playing a pivotal role in fostering collaboration and representing the interests of various organizations within the UN system.

Given his extensive background and experiences, it comes as no surprise that Jordan holds a deep admiration for the multi-dimensional nature of Chinese culture and its rich historical heritage. From the awe-inspiring dynasties to the majestic Forbidden City, Jordan finds himself captivated by the profound legacy that China has preserved throughout the centuries.

The profound words of the Chinese ambassador deeply resonated with Jordan, who traveled all the way from Tampa, Florida, a distance of approximately 1,700 km, to attend the event in New York City. The significance of the occasion prompted Jordan, a staunch advocate of multilateralism, to make the journey and join in the celebration.

Through embracing Chinese tea and culture, Jordan envisions a future where cultural understanding "leads to bridges of peace and prosperity."
