China Railway Tunnel Group (CRTG) undertook the construction of Qamchiq Tunnel in Uzbekistan in 2013 under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). A field survey was conducted on May 24, 2013 and the tunnel was successfully holed through in February, 2016. As the project manager, Zhou Xiaoguang said that the whole process of the project construction is still fresh in his mind.
The opening of the Qamchiq Tunnel, the longest railway tunnel in Central Asia, has changed the plight of transportation in Uzbekistan, which requires detours from other countries. It has also improved the lives of local people. Therefore, the opening of the tunnel is an important milestone in the joint building of the Silk Road Economic Belt between China and Uzbekistan.
