KATHMANDU, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Nepali climbing guide Kami Rita Sherpa set a new record on Wednesday by ascending the world's tallest mountain, Mt. Qomolangma, for the 27th time.

"Kami Rita reached the top of Mt. Qomolangma at 8:30am on Wednesday for the 27th time," said Mingma Sherpa, chairperson of expedition organizer Seven Summit Treks. "It is a great pride for Nepal that we have such a legendary climber," Mingma added.

Yubraj Khatiwada, director of the mountaineering section at Nepal's Department of Tourism, also confirmed the successful ascent by the Sherpa guide.

Kami, 53, first scaled Mt. Qomolangma in May 1994 and achieved the feat of climbing the mountain twice in 2019 within less than a week, reaching the top for the 23rd and 24th times. In May last year, Kami conquered the peak, which straddles Nepal and China, for the 26th time.

On May 14, another Nepali mountaineering guide, Pasang Dawa Sherpa, summitted Mt. Qomolangma for the 26th time.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the first ascent of Mt. Qomolangma, and a record high of 478 climbers from 65 countries and regions have received permits to climb it from the Nepal side during this spring climbing season, according to Nepal's Department of Tourism.
