TEHRAN, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Iran and Iraq have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in implementing oil industry projects, the Shana News Agency affiliated to the Iranian Oil Ministry reported on Thursday.

The deal was signed by Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji and his Iraqi counterpart Hayan Abdel-Ghani at the end of a meeting attended by the two ministers as well as Iraq's Prime Minister Shia' al-Sudani in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Wednesday night, the report said.

Speaking at the meeting, Owji highlighted the necessity of expanding Iran's cooperation with Iraq in the energy sector.

The two sides discussed bilateral cooperation in developing joint oilfields, exporting technical and engineering services, and providing training, while agreeing to implement the previously signed MoUs on cooperation in the oil sector.

At the meeting, Al-Sudani put forward proposals on conducting projects in the areas of developing joint oilfields, training workforce, and implementing petrochemical projects.

Other senior Iraqi officials, including Minister of Electricity Ziad Ali Fadel, took part in the meeting.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, Owji arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday for talks with Iraqi officials.

In late April, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his Iraqi counterpart Abdul Latif Rashid held a meeting in the Iranian capital of Tehran, during which they agreed to enhance cooperation in developing the two countries' infrastructure in the water, electricity, and energy sectors.
