ADEN, Yemen, May 11 (Xinhua) -- A high-ranking Egyptian military delegation arrived in Yemen's southern port city of Aden on Thursday to meet with officials from Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council (PLC).
Rashad Al-Alimi, chief of the PLC, received the visiting Egyptian delegation led by Major General Mohamed Ismail Abdel Fattah in Aden, reported the state-run Saba news agency.
During the meeting, the Yemeni leader emphasized the strong bilateral ties between Egypt and Yemen, highlighting Egypt's steadfast support for Yemen and the PLC.
The Egyptian delegation also discussed with officials from the PLC and other senior military officials, including Yemeni Minister of Defense Mohsen Al-Daari.
Saba did not specify the purpose of the Egyptian delegation's visit which comes days after Yemen's defense minister visited Cairo "to discuss issues of mutual concern."
Yemen has been embroiled in a years-long military conflict after the Houthi militia took control of several northern cities and ousted the Saudi-backed Yemeni government from the capital Sanaa in 2014. The Saudi Arabia-led coalition intervened militarily in the conflict in support of the Yemeni government in 2015.
The United Nations has been working to broker a political solution to the conflict, but previous attempts have failed due to a lack of trust between the warring parties and continued violence on the ground.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in a staggering number of casualties and has pushed the Arab world's poorest country to the brink of a humanitarian crisis, including widespread famine. ■
