PHNOM PENH, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Some 20 political parties had registered to contest in Cambodia's forthcoming general election, as a 15-day party registration period ended on Monday, the National Election Committee (NEC) said in a press statement.

"Twenty political parties have registered with the NEC to compete in the seventh National Assembly election, and 11 of them have been officially recognized," the statement said.

The NEC will decide within a week whether it will recognize the nine other registered political parties.

The Southeast Asian nation is scheduled to hold a general election for the 125-seat National Assembly on July 23, 2023, and more than 9.7 million Cambodians have registered to cast their ballots.

In the last general election held five years ago, 20 political parties participated in the race. As a result, the ruling Cambodian People's Party won all 125 seats in the parliament.
