BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.81 percent to 3,395 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.4 percent higher at 11,225.77 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 1.14 trillion yuan (about 164.8 billion U.S. dollars), up from 1.07 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
Shares in the banking sector were among the biggest gainers, while those related to tourism, hotel and e-commerce saw heavy losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.25 percent to close at 2,273.4 points Monday. ■
