NEW DELHI, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Several people were injured after a blast went off in the northern Indian state of Punjab, local media reports said on Sunday.
The blast took place on Saturday night at Heritage Street in Amritsar, the Sikh holy city of Punjab, when many people were strolling on the street.
The explosion shattered glass panes of a nearby restaurant.
Following the blast, panic gripped the area and police teams reached the spot to ascertain the cause of the blast.
"As many as five to six people sustained injuries following an explosion in the heritage street in the vicinity of Golden Temple in Amritsar late on Saturday night," the Times of India newspaper reported on Sunday.
Police said forensic teams have also reached the spot to investigate the nature of the incident.
"A news related to blasts in Amritsar is going viral on social media, and the situation is under control. Investigation is on to establish the facts of the incident and there is no need to panic," police said in a statement.
Police have urged people to maintain peace and advised them to fact-check information before sharing. ■
