KHARTOUM, May 6 (Xinhua) -- The vehicle of Turkish Ambassador Ismail Cobanoglu came under gunfire in Sudan on Saturday.

The Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) exchanged accusations over the incident.

"Today, the rebel militia fired at the car of the Turkish ambassador and detained him, while at the same time, its fake media machine keeps saying that the armed forces did this, forgetting that the ambassador himself is present and can simply explain what happened," the army said in a statement on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the RSF claimed it was the army who opened fire on the car of the Turkish ambassador in the capital Khartoum, calling the act "a cowardly move representing a flagrant violation of all international norms and agreements to protect diplomatic missions."

According to its statement, the RSF "has managed to evacuate the ambassador and his delegation to a safe place."

Sudan has been witnessing a large-scale evacuation of foreign nationals and diplomats since the eruption of the deadly clashes between the army and the RSF in Khartoum and other areas on April 15.

So far, the deadly clashes have left at least 550 people dead and 4,926 others wounded, according to the Sudanese health ministry.
