SAO PAULO, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Former Real Madrid and Brazil national team boss Vanderlei Luxemburgo has been appointed head coach of Corinthians, the Brazilian Serie A club said on Monday.

The 70-year-old replaces Alexi Stival, better known as Cuca, who was sacked last Wednesday after less than a week in the role.

Corinthians said Luxemburgo would be tied to the Sao Paulo club until December 31, with an option to extend the deal, should both parties agree.

"It's an honor to return to this club that I respect and admire so much," Luxemburgo said on Twitter.

"I look forward to working with all my dedication and passion, always seeking to win with the support of our fans."

Luxemburgo, who has had two previous spells as Corinthians manager, has been out of work since parting ways with Palmeiras in December 2021.

His first stint as Corinthians boss came in 1998 when he led the club to the Brazilian Serie A title. He returned for another period as head coach in 2001.

Luxemburgo is the only manager to win five Brazilian Serie A titles. He was Brazil's national team boss from 1998 to 2000 and had an 11-month spell in the Real Madrid dugout in 2005.

Corinthians are currently 17th in the 20-team Brazilian Serie A standings with one win from their first three games of the season.

Luxemburgo's first game in charge will be a home clash against Ecuador's Independiente del Valle in the Copa Libertadores group stage on Tuesday.
