GAZA/JERUSALEM, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Israel on Monday fired artillery at Gaza's military post in response to a barrage of rockets fired from Gaza earlier in the day, Israeli and Palestinian sources said.
Security sources and eyewitnesses in Gaza said the artillery destroyed the military post, which belongs to the armed wing of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), the ruling faction of the coastal enclave, adding that no injuries were reported.
The artillery shelling of the Hamas military post came shortly after a barrage of rockets was fired from the Gaza Strip at southern Israeli communities.
An Israeli military spokesperson said 22 rockets were fired toward southern Israel. The Iron Dome anti-rocket system intercepted four of them and the rest fell in open areas.
Israel's Magen David Adom rescue service reported that three men, all of them identified as foreign nationals, were injured at a construction site in Sderot city by shrapnel.
The exchange of fire came hours after the death of Khader Adnan, a prominent leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement (PIJ) who went on a hunger strike for 86 days in an Israeli prison.
The joint chamber of military operations in Gaza, which comprises several Palestinian factions' armed wings, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad, claimed responsibility for firing the barrage of rockets at Israel.
It said in a statement that "this comes as an initial response to this heinous crime."
Adnan had survived five hunger strikes in Israeli prisons. He was arrested 12 times and spent eight years in Israeli prisons, most under administrative detention.
According to the Palestinian Prisoners' Club Association, Adnan's death brings the number of Palestinian prisoners who died in Israeli prisons to 237 since 1967, including 75 fatalities due to medical negligence. ■
