WASHINGTON, April 18 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. aviation regulator said on Tuesday that a pause on Southwest Airlines departures has been lifted.

Southwest Airlines "experienced a technical issue with one of their internal systems" on Tuesday morning, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) tweeted.

"At the airline's request, the FAA paused Southwest's departures as they resolved the issue," the agency said. "The pause has been lifted and their service has resumed."

Southwest Airlines, a U.S.-based low-cost carrier, said on Twitter that the company had resumed operations on Tuesday morning following a pause in service.

"We work to restore operations and accommodate disrupted customers as quickly as possible," the airlines said.

More than 1,700 Southwest Airlines flights were delayed as of late Tuesday morning, according to flight-tracking site FlightAware.
