TEHRAN, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Army's Navy Commander Shahram Irani announced on Tuesday that the navy has begun to deploy anti-submarine unmanned aerial vehicles with the capability to detect and destroy both surface and subsurface vessels.
Irani made the remarks in an interview with the semi-official Tasnim news agency, during which he talked about the country's latest progress in drone production.
He said the drones use a homegrown sonar system and other Iran-developed equipment to detect submarines.
On the sidelines of a ceremony marking Iran's National Army Day, which falls on Tuesday, the commander told the press that the Iranian navy stays vigilant against the U.S. naval presence in regional waters.
Irani added that the U.S. forces are "not welcome in the region and should return to their homes," stating that Iran has successfully ensured security in regional waters not only for itself but "also for the entire region and the whole world." ■
