SUVA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Fijians are facing a water crisis on the main island of Viti Levu due to the dry spell during this usually rainy season.

With a water prohibition notice in place for people living along the Lami-Suva-Nausori corridor, consumers are being urged to avoid any non-essential use of water for washing driveways or cars because everyone needs to pitch in to save water in order to pass through this unprecedented dry spell, according to the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF).

WAF Chief Executive Amit Chanan said on Tuesday that there is a gap between supply and demand of 3 million liters of water on a daily basis because of infrastructure problems, according to Fijivillage news website.

The weather event since March 14 has made the situation a lot worse, he said, adding that right now due to a dry weather spell, the gap is 7 million liters and if the river flows keep going down, the production will go down further and that gap will become bigger.

He warned that if the forecast low flows continue, the gap will become more and it will become harder for them to operate the system as well.
