Cao Wanfen's daughter-in-law Fei Yinyuan makes purple clay pottery at a studio in Yixing, east China's Jiangsu Province, March 30, 2023. The city of Yixing, known as the "pottery capital" of the country, has a number of outstanding purple clay pottery artisans, among which the 83-year-old Cao Wanfen is a representative.
Born into a family of pottery craftsmen in Yixing, Cao Wanfen was influenced by purple clay pottery art since her childhood. She became an apprentice of renowned purple clay pottery artist Zhu Kexin in 1955, and was also taught by other artists such as Pei Shimin, Wang Yinchun and Gu Jingzhou.
