ISLAMABAD, March 30 (Xinhua) -- The Pakistan Customs foiled an attempt to smuggle foreign currency and arrested a man at the Jinnah International Airport in the southern port city of Karachi, officials said on Thursday.
Pakistan Customs officials told local media that the officials intercepted a suspicious passenger at the airport, and during the search an amount of 23,000 U.S. dollars was discovered from him.
The money was skillfully concealed in the shoulder bag of the accused, said the officials, adding that he was planning to travel to the United States via a Turkish airline when arrested by authorities.
Legal action has been initiated against the passenger under Pakistan's customs act and further investigations are underway.
Pakistan's Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has fixed a limit of 5,000 U.S. dollars per visit for all passengers 18 years old and above traveling abroad, according to the FBR.
The board has also capped the annual limit of foreign currency for outbound passengers to 30,000 dollars or equivalent for the same age group. ■
