As Uganda struggles with deforestation, Andrew Kalema Ndawula, a local bamboo farmer is leading the way in promoting bamboo farming in Nakaseke district, believing the techniques he learned from China provide a viable solution to environmental protection and employment.
Ndawula, who was trained in bamboo management for two months in China in 2012, started his own bamboo nursery farm with 150,000 seedlings in 2013.
Today, his farm, called Talent Agro-Forestry Farm, boasts 53,000 hectares of bamboo.
Ndawula believes that bamboo can provide income-generating opportunities for households and create related industries, which can provide jobs for millions of youth.
