NEW DELHI, March 17 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 people were killed and 11 others injured after the roof of a cold storage facility collapsed in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said Friday.
The incident took place on Thursday in Chandausi area of Sambhal district, about 373 km northwest of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.
"The death toll in the roof collapse incident in Sambhal today has risen to 10," said a senior police official, Shalabh Mathur. "Eleven persons were rescued from the spot, of whom five are still under medical treatment and six have been discharged from the hospital."
Police said three people are said to be missing.
"Rescue operation is still underway at the spot," Mathur said.
A case has been registered against the owner of the facility, which was said to have been already in dilapidated condition.
Deadly accidents due to failing infrastructure is common in India. Construction experts blamed the lax administration and corruption in India for flouting building rules that often resulted in using poor quality materials, inadequate supervision and poor safety standards for workers. ■
