SEOUL, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's fisheries output fell 6.0 percent last year compared to the previous year, statistical office data showed Friday.

Production in the fishing industry totaled 3,604,000 tons in 2022, down from 3,832,000 tons a year earlier, according to Statistics Korea.

Output from the aquaculture, littoral and deep-sea fishing sectors all declined last year.

The aquaculture output reduced 5.6 percent to 2,268,000 tons due to lower production of kelp, mussels and mullet.

Output in the littoral sector declined 5.9 percent to 887,000 tons on a fall in the catch of squid, yellow corvina and anchovies, while the deep-sea sector output retreated 10.3 percent to 400,000 tons on a decrease in fishing boats.

Production from freshwater fishing advanced 14.3 percent to 49,000 tons in 2022 on the back of higher demand for eels, snails and trout.

In terms of value, total fisheries output edged down 0.4 percent to 9.24 trillion won (7.1 billion U.S. dollars) in 2022.
