ACCRA, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Ghanaian president Nana Ado Dankwa Akufo-Addo expressed condolences Saturday to the family of Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu, who was confirmed dead earlier in the day in the devastating earthquake that rocked Türkiye.
"On behalf of the government and people of Ghana, I extend my sincere, heartfelt condolences to the widow, children, and family of our fellow Ghanaian, Christian Atsu, on the sad news of his death. Ghana football has lost one of its finest personnel and ambassadors, one who will be difficult to replace. He'll be sorely missed," said Akufo-Addo on his official social media account.
Atsu, a former Black Stars player and Hatayspor midfielder, got trapped under the rubble following the earthquake in Türkiye on Feb. 6.
The remains of the Ghanaian footballer were recovered Saturday morning by Turkish authorities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in Ghana confirmed. ■
