BUENOS AIRES, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Austria's former world No. 3 Dominic Thiem and Argentine fourth-seed Diego Schwartzman were bundled out of the Argentina Open on Thursday as the ATP 250 tournament reached the quarterfinal stage.
Thiem, a two-time champion on the outdoor clay of the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club, lost to Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas 6-4, 6-4, as he continues his quest to recapture form and fitness after an injury-ravaged 2022 season.
Varillas will play Lorenzo Musetti in the last eight after the Italian swept past Argentine Pedro Cachin 6-2, 6-3.
Meanwhile, Schwartzman won just 40 percent of first service points on his way to a 6-1, 6-3 defeat to Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles. The latter will meet Francisco Cerundolo in the quarterfinals.
Fifth-seed Cerundolo advanced by cruising to a 6-2, 7-1 win over Jaume Munar of Spain. ■
