TEHRAN, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed and 816 injured in a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that jolted West Azarbaijan Province in northwestern Iran on Saturday night, the province's governor said Sunday.
The quake occurred at 9:44 p.m. local time (1814 GMT) at a depth of 7 km with its epicenter at Khoy County, according to media reports.
Several aftershocks followed the main quake, with the biggest one measuring 4.2-magnitude, said the Iranian Seismological Center.
The earthquake also led to a temporary power blackout in Khoy County, which has been resolved.
According to reports from the earthquake-affected areas, the extent of damage in rural areas was estimated to be severe.
This was the province's second major earthquake in two weeks. A 5.4-magnitude quake struck Khoy County on Jan. 19, injuring more than 190 people. ■
