Ghana expects strengthened bilateral cooperation with China following the latter's lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, Ghanaian Ambassador to China Winfred Nii Okai Hammond has said.

ACCRA, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Ghana expects strengthened bilateral cooperation with China following the latter's lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, Ghanaian Ambassador to China Winfred Nii Okai Hammond has said.

Hammond told Xinhua in a recent interview in Accra, the capital of Ghana, that he is upbeat about the trade and economic relations between the two countries to be boosted after China optimized its COVID-19 measures.

"You have no idea what China's new direction on COVID-19 means to Ghanaian and Chinese businessmen and women. It was difficult for them to have economic and trade exchanges amid the restrictions. But the door is now open," Hammond said.

"We are excited about the new directives on the COVID-19 restrictions in China and are looking forward to strengthening our relationships and building upon the trade and economic relations between our countries," the ambassador added.

Hammond said that the two countries understood how indispensable their cooperation had been and that this cooperation should be continued.

"It is important for Ghanaians to understand that without these strong partnerships, our development would not be where it is," he added.

"We have the strengths that we need to bring together. The Chinese community in Ghana has been part of the country's economic development, and there are many Ghanaians also doing so in China," said the ambassador.

"In the last decades, the diplomatic and bilateral relations between Ghana and China have been growing from strength to strength. The Chinese ambassador and I agree that it is in the interest of our countries to strengthen this relationship because we can not do without each other," he stressed.
